Can a power steering pump be drawing power from the battery if the pump itself is bad? I have a 1999 saturn sl2 dohc manual transmission. Replaced alternator, starter, and battery. The problem is that the battery still isn't putting out over 14 v. It is at 12.4volts or so. So I was thinking it could be the power steering pump? There is also a whining noise coming from it. Could it be a bad bearing from the pulley on the pump? Should I just replace the pump? Is there anything else that could be drawing power from it? Volvo . How to Fix Stripped Threads in an Oil PanBecause the oil drain plug is made of softer metal than the bolt hole in the oil pan, it's a rarer occasion to strip threads in the pan. Stating this fact does not mean the threads in the pan cannot be damaged and sometimes are by novice lube techs who either over-tighten or cross-thread drain plugs severely. Replacing an oil pan can be expensive and labor intensive depending on its position at the bottom of the motor. Rethreading or tapping the oil pan hole is a simpler and much less expensive alternative. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Bolt diameter and thread pitch gauge Tap and die set (metric and standard) Bearing grease Replacement drain plug bolt and gasket Box-end wrench set Step by Step : 1 Measure the oil drain plug diameter and pitch size with the thread and diameter gauges. These devices are quite self-explanatory how to use. Insert the plug into the hole it fits best in. Go between metric and standard until you've found the tightest fit for the plug. Do the same for the thread pitch gauge. 2 Try rethreading the oil pan with the original measurements as your first option. If the pan threads are not overly damaged, this may be a viable option. Locate the tap in the tap and die set that matches the measurements of the original drain plug. 3 Insert the tap into the tap wrench and rub a little bearing grease onto the end of the threads and flutes of the tap. This will help prevent pieces of cut thread from entering the oil pan. 4 Carefully align the tap to the threads of the pan, making sure the tap is straight and flush. Compromised threads may challenge the direction of the tap, so it's important to make sure the alignment of the tap will allow the replacement plug to tighten straight into the pan. 5 Turn the tap and wrench one revolution into the threads of the pan once the threads and flutes of the tap have been aligned and are biting into the compromised threads. Back the tap off 1/2 of a revolution to allow the metal shavings of the pan threads to work their way down the tap. 6 Repeat Step 5 until the tap is turning freely into the pan. The threads of the pan are only as thick as the pan, so this will not take long. 7 Remove the tap and wrench from the threads of the oil pan. 8 Install the new drain plug and gasket making sure the diameter and pitch of the plug match the tap measurement you just cut into the pan. 9 Tighten the plug with a box-end wrench snugly. Do not over-tighten the plug, but make sure you can tighten it properly. If the plug strips or the threads of the plug will not bite into the female threads of the pan, you're down to one more option before having to replace the pan. Step by Step : 10 Change the pitch size to the next coarser pitch and repeat this procedure. This will require a different drain plug pitch size and a replacement gasket. If this procedure still does not work, you'll have to have the pan replaced. Tips & Warnings There are some over-sized self-tapping oil drain plugs that you might consider before throwing in the towel. These plugs act much like a tap. The plug threads have flutes and threads much like a tap. The problem with these is they may only offer you a temporary fix. Once they're removed and then replaced, they may not hold as well in the pan. Some mechanics might suggest a heli-coil kit to repair the stripped threads. A heli-coil kit is a spring-like device that creates its own threads when you screw them into the damaged threads with a bolt. As the bolt tightens, the heli-coil tightens and makes its own threads. The problem with heli-coil repairs is that the next time you remove the oil plug, you take a chance the heli-coil spring might come out with the plug and you're facing having to re-coil the drain hole again. While many mechanics would suggest replacing the pan, retapping the drain hole threads can be an enduring repair, but letting inexperienced lube techs change your oil thereafter, might open up the opportunity for future damage.
Volvo . How to Change the Oil Pan Gasket on a Chrysler LeBaronChanging the oil pan gasket in the Chrysler LeBaron is relatively easy as far as access goes. The oil pan is under the motor, and there is nothing that will get in the way while you remove the oil pan to access the gasket. The oil pan gasket is the source for most major oil leaks, as this portion of the car sits close to the ground and is susceptible to road debris. You can change out the oil pan gasket during your routine oil change. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Crescent wrench Drain pan Oil filter wrench Socket wrench Socket set Rubber mallet Razor knife New oil pan gasket RTV Black Silicone (optional) New oil filter 5 qt. motor oilRemoving the Gasket Step by Step : 1 Locate the oil pan underneath the motor of your Chrysler LeBaron. At the bottom of the oil pan you'll see a drain plug. 2 Unscrew the drain plug with a crescent wrench. Ensure you have a pan to catch the oil draining out. When the oil has drained completely, tighten the drain plug back to the oil pan. 3 Unscrew the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Always change the oil filter when changing the oil. 4 Locate and unscrew all the bolts holding the oil pan to the motor, using a socket wrench. There will be 10 to 12 bolts. 5 Pull the oil pan down. If the oil pan is stubborn, tap it with a rubber mallet to loosen the seal. 6 Clean the old gasket material off the pan with a razor knife or a putty knife. Scrap any old gasket material off the bottom of the motor as well. Replacing the Gasket Step by Step : 1 Place the new gasket around the edge of the oil pan. Match up all the holes in the gasket with the bolt holes on the oil pan. There is only one correct way to position the gasket on the pan. You can add RTV silicone to the gasket to ensure it stays in position; run a small bead of silicone around the oil pan and lay the gasket over the bead. 2 Place the oil pan to the motor and start a bolt on each side. Do not tighten until all the bolts are installed. 3 Start all the bolts to secure the pan in place. Tighten each bolt with the socket wrench. 4 Lubricate the gasket around the oil filter by dabbing your finger in the old engine oil and rubbing that oil around the gasket. This will help preserve the gasket seal and make the filter easier to remove when the next oil change is due. 5 Apply the oil filter to the oil filter housing. Tighten the filter by hand; do not wrench-tighten. Adding Engine Oil Step by Step : 1 Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Twist off the oil cap to pour in fresh oil. 2 Pour four quarts of fresh motor oil to the crankcase. Check the level of the oil. Then pour the oil in half-quart increments until the dipstick indicates the oil level is full. Always allow two to four minutes after pouring to give the oil time to fall to the drain pan. 3 Start the LeBaron and let it run for five minutes. This will circulate the oil and fill the oil filter. 4 Turn the car off and check the motor oil. Add more if necessary. 5 Close the hood. Tips & Warnings Depending on the year of your LeBaron, you may need to raise the car up to have room to work underneath the vehicle. Use caution when raising the vehicle. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the car from moving. Ensure you are working on flat ground. Consult your owner's manual or a dealer for the correct type of motor oil to run in the vehicle. The year and motor type will determine the correct motor oil. Contact a parts store or recycling center for disposal of the old motor oil. Do not overfill the crankcase with oil. Overfilling the oil can cause engine failure. *resistance and the surface of the highway, you don't need much power to keep moving at a good clip after you get there. 176 Part II: What Makes It Go? In Fifth gear, the ratio is usually an overdrive of around 0.75:1, which means that the engine can turn more slowly than the output shaft's speed. You want to be at that ratio on the highway for good fuel economy. However, you do need to downshift if you want to pass someone, because you don't have much engine power with this ratio. Automatic Transmissions Did you know that today's automatic transmissions are computer-controlled hydraulic systems? Previous automatic transmissions were mechanically controlled. This section covers the basic features of both. An automatic transmission works on the same basis as a manual transmis sion does, with a gear selector on the steering column or floor to allow you to tell the car to park, idle, go in reverse, go forward at varying speeds, or 420

But instead of a manual clutch, an automatic transmission uses a torque converter and hydraulic pressure to change gears automatically. The torque converter replaces the standard transmission's clutch. The torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the transmission input shaft. It allows for smooth transfer of power and at highway speeds can be locked up to reduce slippage and improve fuel economy. Shifting in an automatic transmission is controlled by either a hydraulic system or an electronic system. Hydraulically controlled transmissions con sist of an intricate network of valves and other components along with hydraulic pressure to control the operation of planetary gearsets (see Figure 9-6). These gearsets can be fashioned to generate three, four, or five forward speeds. Volvo . How much does it cost to check the intermediate steering shaft and have someone fix it?
Oldsmobile Calais. * A very thin oil called transmission fluid fills the transmission system and generates hydraulic pressure. As the engine speed changes, the pump that pumps the transmission fluid to develop hydraulic pressure also changes speed. The transmission fluid responds to the changes in pressure by flowing through the transmission at different rates. When the car is moving slowly, the pressure is low, and only the low gears respond. In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates. These bands and plates do the same thing that the clutch on a manual transmission does — they pull various gears into and out of action. When mechanics tell you that your bands need adjusting, these are the bands they're talking about. They can usually make this adjustment without taking the transmission apart.
